AVALON 737 VS NEVE 1073 PLUGIN FULL
When I put this on the sound-hole, I get a warm tone full of body. I LOOOOVE the Soundelux U99 and use it often. For example let's say I'm recording acoustic guitar. I really like the ISA range because it allows me to use a choice of microphones. I used to own a pair of ISA430mkII's, traded them in for a pair of Liquid Channels, currently own an ISA428 and just placed an order for both a RED1 and a RED8. Those that know me know I'm a BIG fan of Focusrite. I think that describing the ISA pre is best by saying: Clean and Transparent, but not sterile or too transparent. Yes, it's VERY clean and has some transparency.but there is some color too. Just a note, I wouldn't say that the Focusrite ISA is on the other side of the scale for clean and transparent. One note, the MX60 isn't in the same class as the others but definitely a great affordable pre none the less. my buddy brought a vintech and ua610 to my place for an a/b/c comparison.Īll of these are great products that each have their own strengths. I know these things are extremely subjective, but I would just like to know what others are using. If I go with the LA-610, then everything I do will have that color added, and I am not sure this would be a good thing always.Īnyone got any opinions (either from real experience with these pieces or word-of-mouth)? For this reason, I am leaning a little toward the transparency of the Focusrite - I figure I have plenty of plugins (like UAD-1 stuff) which can "color" the track after the fact, if I want.

I am only going to be able to buy one mic pre to use for almost all of my tracking, so I want something that can handle almost any situation. I am having trouble deciding if I want to go for the color, or for the clean. The Vintech X73i (a reproduction of the Neve 1073 channel strip) is somewhere in the middle, but leaning toward a little color, and the Drawmer leans a little more to transparent. On the color-clean scale, it seems the Focusrite is on the far left at being transparent, clean and quiet, while the LA-610 is on the far right at adding color, character, warmth, "vintage". I am also looking at the Drawmer MX60 (it is around $750) So, I won't be getting a Manley or an Avalon, but it's better than ART!Īnyway, I have narrowed things down to three (I think) - the Focusrite ISA 220, the Vintech X73i, and the Universal Audio LA-610. I suppose I am going for the low-upper end in terms of price - I'm looking to spend around $1500. This is OT for a DP BB, but anyway, I want to buy a really really good mic preamp/channel strip. Ok - now for the real reason I logged on tonight (I got sucked into that massive Apple-Intel thread! Sheesh)
